Chapter 3

Jackson

Notes of cinnamon and vanilla waft through the air and my bear takes notice lifting his nose to inhale the scent. Breathing in traces of wildflowers and a sweet woodsy aroma gives me the feeling of home, more than I’ve ever felt. That’s when I realize I’ve scented her. I’ve scented my mate.

Mate.

My bear takes off, running as fast as he can go to get to her before she disappears. The woman we have been waiting for is finally within reach and we won’t let her get away. I break through the trees and run into the road, stopping when what I’ve been chasing my entire life is before me. A white car comes to a screeching halt, inches from my bear.

It’s hard to see her face since she’s in her car, but what I can see has me captivated. My bear is pushing for me to go to her, to claim her, but I hold him back because shining back at me are her bright blue eyes staring at me in fear. When she looks away, I run off towards my house to change quickly. My bear doesn’t like it and makes it known, roaring as I push him forward and away from our mate. He’s worried she’ll get away from us, but I know better. We’ll be with her in a few minutes. If she’s on the property that means someone must have let her in. There’s no way she was able to get in any other way. Give me a minute to change. We can’t go to her as a bear and risk her leaving because she doesn’t understand us. I tell my bear, needing him to calm down. I pray for my cousins’ sakes she’s here for Lillian and not any of them. My bear strongly agrees.

When I pull up to Jameson’s home all of the vehicles look familiar except one. Jameson’s truck is parked on the right of Lillian’s black Jeep Jameson got her a few weeks after her accident. On the other side of Jameson are Hudson and Weston’s trucks. Remington probably caught a ride with his twin Hudson. None of that matters to me right now though, because all the way at the other end of the row of vehicles, parked next to Lillian’s Jeep, is a white Camry.

Bingo! A slow smile spreads across my face. It’s the very same white Camry that almost hit me not ten minutes ago.

I purposely park behind her and get out of my truck. If she intends to leave, she’ll need to get through me first. I’m dying to get in there and meet my mate, but before I do, I check out her car. Something is bothering me about it. Call it police intuition or shifter senses, I can’t leave until I’ve inspected it. Thankful for my shifter abilities, I’m able to check out her car in the low setting sun. The car looks to be almost twenty years old and is in rough condition.
